The Things You Should Know About Hypnosis

Hypnosis and its arm, hypnotherapy, have been the focus of a lot of myths created by popular imagination. Some consider them to be black magic whereas others reject them as pseudo science. Given below are some general misconceptions associated with hypnosis, and the real facts behind them.

Hypnosis has nothing to do with magic spells of any kind. It is a very simple technique, which can be explained easily with the help of psychology and other scientific procedures. The authenticity of hypnosis is suspected even by individuals who have watched it casting its spell on subjects. They believe that the subjects who have undergone hypnosis are mentally not powerful enough to resist the influence of the practitioner. But that is not true at all. Hypnosis can be done on anyone regardless of his or her mental strength.

Another myth is that hypnosis is an alternate state of consciousness, which again is a big misconception. A hypnotized individual is totally aware of his environment. Hypnosis actually induces a state of absolute calm characterized by a growth in levels of attentiveness, and this intensified awareness helps the subject to absorb new inputs with considerable ease.

Another myth, which has been propagated by some researchers, claims that hypnosis can be applied on merely 5% of the human population. Although, the research has some element of truth to it, what makes it hollow is the fact that the researchers used the identical hypnosis technique for everyone. Hypnosis can’t be straight jacketed like that and works only if there are different methodologies for different personality styles.

People also tend to associate hypnosis to meditation. However, communication between the subject and the practitioner is paramount in hypnosis, while meditation is like a communion with the self without any external interaction involved. Similarly, a state of trance is also sometimes equated with hypnosis, which is not correct. Trance is again a mental state devoid of any communication, whereas communication forms the very foundation of the hypnosis technique.

It is often believed that hypnosis training or hypnotherapy cannot cause transformations in appearance or in behavioural patterns of an individual. Hypnosis is obviously not wizardry that it can change the physical appearance of an individual just like that. However, it can propel the body to a better shape through behavioural changes like eating less, and giving up smoking and other addictive habits by ensuring a high level of inspiration in an individual.

Hypnosis, and specifically hypnotherapy, can have an important function to play in the overall welfare of a person, and not trying them out just because of some misconceptions is an act of folly.
